Jeffery Robinson will be speaking at Long Center at 7pm November 19, 2024

Who We Are is a documentary based on a series of lectures by Jeffery Robinson, a criminal defense lawyer and former deputy legal director of the ACLU. If you didn’t see the film in 2022 and 2023, when 10 local organizations brought it here, watch it on Netflix or Amazon Prime before Jeffery Robinson comes to Lafayette. You won’t want to miss hearing him speak! He was concerned about the direction of our country before we knew about Project 2025. In the film, Robinson takes us into the world of racism both generationally and institutionally, historically, and personally. This journey began when Robinson found himself suddenly the father to a 13-year-old Black teenager when a sister died. He began a deep dive into Black history and was shocked at what his Harvard education hadn’t taught him. From this came his lectures. The film, directed by Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler (daughters of the Chicago Seven lawyer, William Kunstler), intersperses scenes of Robinson traveling the country. Robinson asks that we speak to what was then and what is now as we face “our shared history” of slavery. “Once again, young activists in America are making us look in the mirror.” Robinson sees our nation at a tipping point. “What are we going to do about it?”.
