Blue Moon Rising – Singing of Justice, Peace, and Hope

Lafayette, IN – Lafayette’s non-audition community choir, Blue Moon Rising, will present its “Spring Sing” on May 6 at 7:00 p.m. The concert will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Meridian St., West Lafayette, IN. All are invited to stay afterwards for a reception with refreshments. There is a suggested donation of $10 to help with the choir’s scholarship fund and children (any age) are free.

With the confusion, fear, and anxiety that has been so prevalent in the past months, the Wednesday evening gathering of Blue Moon Rising have been a place where members can sing hopeful songs and deepen the relationships that result in a close, warm community. Members look forward to sharing songs with the public that express a commitment to social change, peace and justice. These include the Chapin Sisters’ “We Will Not Stop Singing,” and the civil rights-era song “Woke Up This Morning (with my mind stayed on freedom). Similar themes are expressed in songs from other cultures such as Babethandaza, an uplifting South African song about working and praying together to effect positive change. Perhaps the most powerful song listeners will hear is “Water is Life (or Mni Wiconi). This song was written by singer/songwriter Sara Thomsen just after she returned from Standing Rock several months ago. It is a powerful and poetic expression of the interconnectedness of all life, and reminds us that “water is life for everything.”

Blue Moon Rising is a member of the Ubuntu Choir Network, a growing collective of choirs who believe that the joy of singing is a universal birthright, and that together, we can help improve the world by joining voices in song. Ubuntu choirs seek to create a world in which we listen deeply to those around us, celebrate diversity, trust in our voices and bring them forward on behalf of harmony, justice and peace. __www.ubuntuchoirs.net__

The choir will not meet in the summer, but plans are being made for several community singing events open to the public. The next 15-week choir session will begin in August 2017.
